We arrived Friday night at 7:00pm to Putnam Pond State Camp Ground.  Located miles west of Ticonderoga, NY on the northern edge of the Pharaoh Mountain Wilderness area.  The bugs we minimal but we soon had a smokey fire going to chase off the black flies and mosquitoes.  We had camp set up in about 1/2 hour and a dinner of hot dogs going.  Big plans for Saturday we all turned in about 10:00pm.  Saturday morning we were up and had eggs and sausage and bread, packed lunch and hit the trail by 9:30am.  The goal of the hike was to locate the old Clear Pond Mine and blast furnace.  The first leg of the hike takes us to Bear Pond, Rock Pond and Little Rock Pond, at a distance of 2.9 miles.  It was east to moderate and the humidity was low.  We passed by parts of Putnam Pond and North Pond along with several remote campsites.   The next leg of the hike was to Clear Pond that took us another 2.4 (2.6 depending on which trail sigh you read)  We reached the Clear Pond and had lunch at a camp site on the south western shore.  Les spotted a trout about 12-14inches long.  Clear pond is stocked with Rainbow and Browns each year and bait in not allowed so the fish can get pretty large.  We watched a feeding loon that seemed not to care that we were there.  Jon decided it was a good idea to get wet.  We checked out the information we had for the mine and blast furnace and found it was completely in the opposite direction, so we turned around and went to the Northeast shore.  Joh, Chris and Phil decided to bushwhack up the hill to see if they could find and signs of the the mine.  Gone for about 20 minutes, they found nothing.  Onward we go.  We moved on to the lean-to and Chris, Jon and Phil decided to follow the sign that said "Putnam Pond .6 miles"  They were warned that it may not go anywhere but the lake, not the camp ground. We went anyway.  Sure enough it was a canoe access point only.  After some debate we decided to bushwhack the shore and try to catch the trail along North Pond on the west side.  Definitely not an easy hike.  No real ground all plant material so ankles turned and feet slipped.  We did make the trek of 2 miles in record time and found the trail with no problem.  We finished off the remaining 1 mile back to camp to find a sleepy eyed Mr. Terry waiting for us.  Wonder what he did while we were gone....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.  Everyone hit the showers and had a nice dinner of Spaghetti and meatballs, salad, French bread and cake for dessert.  Lights out about 10:00pm.  Sunday we broke camp and hit the rode about 8:30am.  Another Scorpion trip completed successfully.
